Tomodachi Life: What to Do When Miis Will Not Make Up After a Fight

In Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, two residents can suddenly get into a fight.

When a red bubble appears or a Mii is angry in their room, it is easy to worry: should you leave it alone, can the relationship recover if the apology fails, and can sweethearts or spouses break up because of it?

The short answer is that most fights are not instant, permanent endings. First, calm down the angry Mii. If they ask to make up, support the apology. Even if the other Mii refuses to forgive, the relationship may still move again after sadness recovery, time passing, or a later request.

This guide covers the basic making-up flow, failed apologies, leaving fights alone, serious fights, ex-friends, awkward states, "I do not want to see them" situations, sweetheart fights, and spouse fights.

This guide is based on Tomodachi Collection: Waku Waku Life / Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream behavior as of Ver.1.0.3. If sadness or post-fight behavior looks stuck, check that your software is updated first.

Quick answer: what to do first after a fight

When a fight happens in Tomodachi Life, start with these three checks.

SituationWhat to do first
A red bubble is showingVisit that Mii room
The Mii is angryUse food or items to lower the anger
The Mii asks to make upSupport the apology

Right after a fight, the Mii is still too angry to talk normally.

Do not think of the apology as the first step. Calm the Mii down first. Once the anger drops, the Mii may ask to make up or apologize.

If the other Mii accepts the apology, the relationship recovers.

Situation checklist

If you are not sure what state your Miis are in, start with this checklist.

SituationRiskWhat to do
Normal fightLow to mediumCalm the angry Mii down
A Mii asks to make upLow to mediumSupport the apology and send them to the other Mii
The other Mii refuses to forgiveHighRecover sadness and wait for another chance
Serious fightHighUse a third Mii or time passing if needed
Ex-friends or awkward stateHighDo not give up immediately; wait for help events or another request
"I do not want to see them"HighChoose the option to reconsider if the game offers one
Sweetheart or spouse fightMedium to highStep in early if you care about the relationship
Sadness does not clearPossible bug or old versionCheck for a software update

The three states that usually feel most urgent are refused apologies, "I do not want to see them", and ex-friends.

They are bad signs, but they do not always mean the relationship is permanently over. Time passing and other events can still move the relationship.

If making up does not work, check updates too

If a making-up attempt fails and the sadness meter disappears but the Mii still does not recover, or if relationship events feel stuck, check whether the game is on the latest version.

Nintendo update notes have included fixes related to failed fight reconciliation and sadness not clearing correctly.

  • A bug where a failed reconciliation after a fight could cause a crush on another Mii to disappear
  • A bug where a Mii could fail to recover from sadness even after the sadness meter was gone

Because of that, "I cannot make them up" or "sadness will not go away" may not always be a player-action problem. An older software version can also matter.

On Nintendo Switch, highlight the software on the HOME menu, press +, and check Software Update.

Why fights happen in Tomodachi Life

Fights happen through everyday resident conversations and relationship events.

They can happen not only between Miis who get along badly, but also between good friends, best friends, sweethearts, and spouses. Close relationships create more contact, so you may see more events between those Miis.

A fight does not automatically mean the two Miis are incompatible or about to break up.

However, failed apologies or long neglect can make the relationship worse. If the relationship matters to you, step in when you see the red bubble.

Basic steps for making up after a fight

For a normal fight, the basic flow is simple.

1. Visit the Mii with the red bubble

First, look for the Mii with the red bubble.

A fighting Mii is often in their room, but depending on the time and current activity, they may be in another place or facility. If you cannot find them, wait a little and check the island again.

2. Calm the angry Mii down

An angry Mii usually cannot move straight into making up.

Use actions that raise satisfaction, such as food, clothing, interiors, treasures, or travel. If you know a favorite food, it can help calm the Mii faster.

There is no single guaranteed item for every Mii and every situation. Think of it as raising mood and lowering anger until the Mii is ready to talk.

3. Support the apology when the Mii asks to make up

After the anger settles, the Mii may ask to make up or apologize.

If you support the request, the Mii goes to apologize. If the other Mii accepts, making up succeeds.

After success, the relationship may return normally, or it may still feel a little awkward. If the pair matters, keep an eye on them afterward.

What to do when the other Mii refuses to forgive

The most stressful result is when the other Mii refuses to forgive.

In that case, the Mii who apologized may become sad. This still does not always mean the relationship is completely finished.

Steps after a refused apology

After a refused apology, watch both Miis, not only the one who became sad.

StepWhat to do
1Recover the sad Mii mood
2Check the Mii who refused too
3Wait for an orange bubble or another request
4Support making up again if another chance appears

Player reports suggest that the Mii who refused can later ask to make up after all.

Do not assume one refusal locks the relationship forever. Recover sadness, then watch the pair over minutes, hours, or even several days of play.

What to do during a serious fight

A serious fight is riskier than a normal fight.

The angry presentation is stronger, and the two Miis may be harder to reconcile directly.

ComparisonNormal fightSerious fight

Making-up difficultyNormalHigher
Risk from leaving it aloneMediumHigher
Third Mii importanceHelpfulVery important

Serious fights may be difficult for the two Miis to solve by themselves.

If a mutual friend or a Mii close to one side can mediate, use that chance. Best friends and close friends are especially useful as mediators.

If it does not resolve immediately, recover sadness and wait for later requests or events.

Can ex-friends, awkward relationships, and "I do not want to see them" recover?

If a fight gets worse, the relationship may move into an ex-friend, awkward, or "I do not want to see them" type of state.

That looks serious, but it is not always permanent.

Actions that can help the relationship recover

Even if the relationship does not fully recover at once, relationships in Tomodachi Life can keep changing over time.

ActionWhat it may help with
WaitAnother request may appear
Recover sadnessThe next event may become easier to trigger
Help a troubled MiiThe relationship may improve a little
Watch orange bubblesA new making-up request may appear

Sometimes one Mii helping another during a problem event can improve the relationship a little.

Right after they become ex-friends, repeatedly forcing contact may not help. Clear sadness first, then give the game time to move.

Can fights between sweethearts or spouses lead to a breakup?

Sweethearts and spouses can fight too.

A fight by itself does not mean they will immediately break up.

Still, because those relationships are important, failed apologies can feel more damaging.

SituationRecommended response
Normal fight between sweetheartsCalm anger early
Spouse fightPrioritize making up instead of leaving it alone
Refused apologyRecover sadness and wait for another request
"I do not want to see them"Choose reconsider if possible
Relationship already looks unhappyWatch other relationship events too

For favorite couples or spouses, there is little upside to ignoring the fight for a long time.

If an "I do not want to see them" type of request appears, the relationship may already be in a bad state. If you do not want them to split, choose the reconsider option when the game offers it.

What happens if you leave a fight alone?

A fight can sometimes settle naturally if you leave it alone.

That does not mean waiting is always safe. You may miss a making-up chance, the relationship may stay awkward, or it may move toward an ex-friend state.

Cases where waiting is reasonable

For unimportant pairs, waiting a little can be reasonable.

  • You do not want to spend items right now
  • The fighting Miis are not important to your island story
  • You want to watch what happens
  • You cannot find the angry Mii yet

Cases where you should step in early

The more important the relationship is, the safer it is to act when you see the red bubble.

  • Sweethearts or spouses are fighting
  • Your favorite Miis are fighting
  • It has become a serious fight
  • A refusal to forgive has already happened
  • The relationship may be heading toward "I do not want to see them"

As a general rule, if you care about the pair, handle the red bubble sooner rather than later.

Why the same Miis keep fighting

The same two Miis may fight several times.

That is not automatically a bug. Good friends, sweethearts, spouses, and best friends interact often, so they can also generate more conversation events and trouble events.

If your island has a small social network, the same pair may interact repeatedly and make fights more visible.

What to adjust when fights happen often

You cannot remove fights entirely, but a wider social network gives you more possible mediators and more event variety.

  • Add more Miis
  • Broaden friendship lines
  • Create mutual friends
  • Do not leave sadness or bad moods unattended
  • Keep the software updated

When you cannot find the fight partner

Sometimes a Mii says they want to make up, but you cannot find the other Mii.

Check these places first.

  • Your room
  • The other Mii room
  • A friend room
  • Facilities
  • The plaza or outdoor areas
  • The same places again after time passes

Miis move around the island, so a Mii who is not in one place now may return later.

If you cannot find them right away, solve another problem first or check again after a few minutes.

Summary: stay calm, but act early for important relationships

Fights are part of Tomodachi Life relationship events.

Red bubbles and serious fights can look alarming, but the basic flow is: lower anger, support making up, and if it fails, recover sadness and wait for another chance.

Here is the short version.

SituationResponse
Normal fightCalm anger and support making up
Refused apologyRecover sadness and wait for another request
Serious fightUse a third Mii mediator
Ex-friends or awkward stateWait for time passing or help events
"I do not want to see them"Choose reconsider if possible
Sweetheart or spouse fightStep in early
Sadness will not clearCheck software updates

If your Miis are fighting right now, start by visiting the angry Mii room and calming them down.

Even after one failed apology, the relationship may still have another chance. Watch the next request or event before giving up.

Frequently asked questions

If making up fails, can the relationship recover?

Yes, it can recover. Even after one Mii refuses to forgive, the other side may later ask to make up again. Recover sadness and wait for more events.

Does becoming ex-friends mean it is over?

Not always. Ex-friend or awkward states can sometimes improve through time passing, another request, or help events.

Is it okay to leave a fight alone?

For unimportant Miis, waiting can be fine. For sweethearts, spouses, best friends, or favorite Miis, acting early is safer because you may miss a making-up chance.

What is different about a serious fight?

A serious fight has stronger anger and is harder to resolve. A mutual friend or close Mii may become more important as a mediator.

What should I do if sadness is gone but the Mii has not recovered?

Check for software updates first. Nintendo update notes have included fixes related to sadness not clearing correctly.

Can sweethearts or spouses break up after a fight?

A fight alone does not guarantee a breakup. But repeated failed apologies or "I do not want to see them" states can make the relationship worse, so step in early if you want to keep the couple together.
