QR codes and sharing in Tomodachi Life

Older Tomodachi Life games, especially the 3DS-era entries, really did use Mii QR codes a lot for sharing characters. That is why you can still find old QR images, character QR collections, and old tutorials online.

But the new Switch game, Living the Dream, is not the same system as the old 3DS version, so it cannot scan and use those original QR codes. Treat the old QR code as a design reference instead. You will need to copy and rebuild the Mii manually in your own game.

This site is curated by hand to collect designs that are actually convenient to recreate, with clear pictures and useful instructions. In most cases, that means easy-to-read grid references, not old QR codes.

The short answer: in Living the Dream, do not expect QR codes to work like they did in old 3DS posts.

Aside from local wireless sharing with someone nearby, designs you see online usually cannot be shared or imported directly through QR codes.

When you see clothes, food, pets, buildings, or island objects online, the only practical thing to do is draw them yourself from a pattern sheet or screenshot. That is the reason this pattern site exists: to help you find clear designs that can actually be recreated, instead of blurry shares with unclear steps that are hard to read.

Local wireless means the other person needs to be nearby and able to connect with you in the game. It is better suited to sharing designs with offline friends.

It is not “I saw a QR code on social media, so everyone can scan it and import it remotely.”

If all you have is a screenshot, an old QR image, or a social media picture, you can only rebuild the Mii by following the visible face parts and settings.

Palette House designs cannot be shared like old QR codes. You cannot scan a QR code and instantly get someone else’s clothes, food, pets, buildings, or island objects.

You need a picture you can follow. A clear pattern sheet or full grid shows where the colors and shapes go, so you can redraw the design in your own game.

If a design only has a pretty finished screenshot and no clear pattern sheet or grid, it will be hard to recreate comfortably.

The easiest designs to draw from are the ones with a clear pattern sheet or full grid. A finished preview only tells you whether it looks good; it does not tell you how to draw every square.

If you want designs that are easier to recreate, open the Has Pattern Sheet filter on this site’s category pages. That filter prioritizes posts with clear sheets or grid references.

If a design has no clear sheet, treat it as inspiration first, or choose something simpler and easier to read.

If you want other players to enjoy or recreate your design, try not to take a phone photo of the Switch screen. Phone photos often have color shifts, glare, blur, and tilted angles, which makes it harder for others to judge colors and pixel positions.

A better method is to use the Switch screenshot button, move the image to your computer, and then post it to Xiaohongshu, Reddit, X, or another social platform. On Switch, the usual path is System Settings > Data Management > Manage Screenshots and Videos > Copy to a Computer via USB Connection.

You may need a USB data cable. On Mac, the Switch may not appear like a normal camera or USB drive; if it is not recognized, you may need an MTP-compatible file transfer app.

Old QR posts are not useless. You can use them to confirm who the character is, see what the creator was aiming for, roughly copy the face, or follow the original post to find a clearer new reference.

If the QR itself does not work in your version, rebuild the Mii by hand. Try to match the face shape, hairstyle, eyes, brows, mouth, glasses, facial hair, colors, and personality impression.

Keep source links when you save a reference. They help with creator credit and let you return if someone posts a clearer remake or Living the Dream-specific version later.

When sharing a Mii, provide clear screenshots of the face and settings. If it requires local wireless sharing, say that directly in the social media post.

When sharing a Palette House design, ideally include both the finished preview and the pattern sheet. The preview shows the result; the sheet is what lets other people actually draw it.

If you submit something to this site, provide a public source link, clear images, and creator credit. A design with a clear sheet is more useful than a finished-only screenshot.
