Making Steps

Editorial notes based on creator, source, or submitter information.

For the cinema, use The Truman Show as the exterior poster reference. Put the poster on a vertical board in front of the building to make it clearer, and carefully align all objects onto one plane so gaps are not obvious except from a strict side view. Place Reze's cafe next to the cinema and add a phone booth if you want the same corner composition.

Recreation Notes ?
Discussed the cinema design for my Tomodachi Life island with a friend, and we decided the exterior poster should be The Truman Show. At first I wanted to make the big screen look like a surveillance livestream feed, but the more I thought about it the more unsettling it felt… The second idea was to make it look like a TV static screen, but after trying it out it was terrifying at night so I scrapped that too. In the end I referenced the original poster and had my Miis appear in it. To get the poster looking clear enough, I placed vertical boards in front of the building — it took a lot of effort to get everything aligned on the same plane. As long as you're not viewing it from a direct side angle, the gaps aren't too obvious (compared to lines blurring into a mess, I'd honestly rather have pixel perler beads…) A lot of people describe Tomodachi Life as an ant farm — but isn't a life sim just another kind of observation box… Thinking about the cinema always makes me think of Ashu, so I put the café where Rei works part-time right next door, and drew a phone booth too… Even though Tomodachi Life is always sunny, this little corner always feels a bit melancholy…
